DUAL CITIZENSHIP

The Mission has since 1st June, 2003, commenced the processing of applications for Dual Citizenship in accordance with the provisions of the Citizenship Act, 2001, (Act 591). Applicants eligible for Dual Citizenship are those who hold citizenship of another country, in spite of their Ghanaian nationality. In all instances, all applicants are required by law to provide evidence of their Ghanaian nationality or their country of birth.

Other Requirements:
  1. Birth certificates or passports

  2. Parents’ nationality - (passports)

  3. Or voters ID card, Birth certificate of parents

  4. Or Swiss or other non Ghanaian passports

  5. All applicants are required to complete a Dual Citizenship application form, which costs SFr.120.00, and pay an additional sum of SFr.50.00 for the issuance of the certificate.

    On acquiring the dual citizenship status, an applicant would be entitled to apply for a Ghanaian passport besides the passport of the other country whose citizenship he has already acquired. However, no one may use two travel documents concurrently on the same voyage. Those who violate the law would be liable on summary conviction to a fine not exceeding 250 penalty units or a term of imprisonment not exceeding a year or both. In this connection, all dual citizens are required to travel with their Certificates of Dual Citizenship and only one passport of their choice.

    It is anticipated that successful applicants would be able to receive their certificates within three months of application.
